Toronto Family Photographer: Iggy & Asia

Meet Ephraim, also known as "Iggy".  Meet Ephraim's sister, Anastasia, also known as "Asia".

Iggy was the winner of the Addaboy Spokesboy contest, held earlier this year. Addaboy was looking for a group of boys to represent the brand by sporting the clothes out in the community. There was also a grand prize winner and the prize was... you guessed it? A photo shoot with me! I have to admit, there was a time when I would have thought that taking photos of boys might not be that interesting or fun (I'm a girlie-girl so I am a bit biased), but I now know that it's just the opposite. These days, with clothes and accessories like those that Addaboy produces, boys can have some serious style going on. And surprisingly, they are often very cooperative in front of the camera – giving a mix of expressions from fun, gorgeous smiles, to serious (dare I say sultry?) stares. You know they will be heartbreakers one day.

To enter the Addaboy contest, parents were asked to fill out a questionnaire. Iggy's mom wrote:

Ever since he was a baby he was always smiling and just a charmer. We called him our little Joker when he was little because he was always doing funny things. He’s full of character and comes up with wacky little quips and songs. His resiliency and loving nature has shown this past year when he has gone though some health issues as a patient at Sick Kids. His nature is such that even when he’s not feeling well he’s still making people laugh and playing as if nothing was wrong, it’s amazing. He’s also oddly into 80’s movies that hardly anyone even knows ie. The Explorers, The Wizard, The Dark Crystal. It’s like he’s wise beyond his years. He loves music and instruments and adores rocking out to Beatles rock band. He’s also never without his skateboard. Basically he’s a quirky little charmer, who everyone falls in love with.

And fall in love I did. Iggy's sister Asia came along for the shoot, and she was just as sweet. We met at the AGO and then headed down to Queen West. Together, they giggled and ran around – and I, along with their parents, raced to keep up. It was a great morning and I'm so happy that I can give these photos to such a beautiful family. Iggy's mom also has a fun blog, That Boys Got Style – Check it out!

Toronto newborn photographer: Baby Bennett

Because we moved into our new house (in a new neighborhood) only a week before my due date, it has been a bit of a slow process to meet all of our new neighbors. And everyone hibernating for the winter didn't help either. But slowly, Kyle and I have been meeting more and more people and we're really starting to feel like this is home! Lucky for us, we have become friends with a couple across the street who are expecting their first baby in 3 weeks, and we had heard through the grapevine that there was another couple down the street expecting as well. When heading out for a walk a few weeks ago, I noticed this large stork on this couple's front lawn, so the rumors were confirmed true and Robin would indeed have second little friend on the street (and we would have more parents to hang out with!). A week later I finally bumped into baby Bennett on his first walk with his parents. What a handsome little guy! After chatting with his parents for a few minutes, a photo session was arranged for the next night.

You guys were a dream to work with. Welcome to the 'hood Bennett! xx

Toronto Family Photographer: Three little ladies...

A sister is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost. --Marion C. Garretty

A few weeks ago (the day before Mother's Day to be exact!) I spent the morning with three very busy, but very sweet little ladies, their lovely parents and their dog George. What a beautiful family! It was sunny and warm so we headed outside for a walk around the neighborhood. I had so much fun watching these girls interact so lovingly with one another – an impromptu dance on the front lawn, running up and down the sidewalk, and picking flowers.

Engaged: Shannon & Matt

Shannon is an old, long-distance friend, who I haven't done very well with staying in touch with over the years. Thankfully, we have the kind of friendship where we can pick up exactly where we left off and the fact that we haven't really talked or seen each other in over a year (or two) is completely forgotten. Thanks to Facebook, Shannon noticed that I had started taking my photography a bit more seriously, and contacted me last year to see if I'd be interested in shooting her wedding. Shooting a wedding!?! I think my first response to her was something along the lines of "You're crazy". Luckily, the wedding was still months away and Shan offered to give me some time to think about it. Since then, I have managed to get quite a bit of practice in and I now feel ready to take on this very important and hugely monumental task for her (terrified, but ready.)

Last weekend I drove up to Barrie so I could take some engagement photos of Shannon and Matt at one of their favourite spots – a beautiful park that's about a 5 minute walk from their condo. This was my first time meeting Matt, and I could immediately see why he is so perfect for Shan. Most guys don't overly enjoy having their photo taken, especially on a cold and rainy Friday night, but Matt took on the task with positivity and enthusiasm, hugging Shan to keep her warm and carrying our bags as we moved through the park. It didn't take long before it felt like I had known him for years as well.

This couple is beautiful, inside and out and I had such a wonderful time with them. We started the session in the rain and finished with a lovely, hazy sunset. It was perfect, just like Shannon and Matt.

This next photo is one of my favourites and I'm SO glad Shannon agreed to overcome her fear of bugs and get down on the ground for it (even though we could actually see the slugs and worms coming out of the grass because of the rain). What a trooper! A gorgeous trooper.

I was literally squealing with delight when this golden glow started happening behind them. It made my week.

SO excited for your wedding. xo

Finn's 1st Birthday

Happy Tuesday! Okay, so I'm late posting these. I have to admit, I haven't had the best process in place for editing and blogging. But I have been making changes to my workflow and things are definitely speeding up! Finn is my sister's baby... third baby to be exact! It's tough being the youngest with a very outgoing, inquisitive older sister and a very energetic, spirited older brother. But Finn takes it all in stride. Finn's siblings, Ivey and Hudson, were the inspiration for my first DSLR. My sister and I scrapbooked together (yep, I'm a huge scrapbooking fan and not afraid to admit it!) and I used to surprise her with books for the kids for Christmas (knowing she was super busy and didn't have time to complete all the projects she wanted to). Used to. Now that I have a baby of my own, the scrapbook supplies sit on the shelf untouched. I haven't had time to work on anything for Robin, let alone poor Finn. So feeling guilty that I haven't done any special projects for him, I really wanted to do a birthday photoshoot for just Finn. I can't believe a year has gone by already!

From Finn's newborn shoot, one year ago...

And as a tribute to my original inspiration, a few of Ivey and Hudson, who have grown up so much this past year...

My sister and I had an argument last night. For those who know us, you know how close we are. She's my very best friend so it kills me when there is tension between us.

Dana, I hope this cheers you up! I'm sorry. xx

Spring!?! Is that finally you?

It is such a relief to have the weather finally improving! So earlier this week I took Robin outside and for the first time we did a mini-photo session in the backyard! (Note, the backyard is a serious work-in-progress. While it looks pretty rough, this is actually a pretty big improvement from what it was before. Kyle is desperate to grow the grass from seed... we'll see what happens). We were only out for about 15 minutes because it is still pretty chilly but Robin seemed to enjoy it. She is sitting up now on her own which gives her a whole new perspective on the world.

And a few self-ies taken inside. CHEESY, but I don't care :-)

My favourite from the day...

Kyle doesn't get it because it's out of focus. But that's what I like about it.

Kristen, Erik + Violet

Two weeks ago I visited Kristen, Erik, Hallie, and their new teeny, tiny bundle of joy. At only 7 days old, Violet was absolutely perfect. I had been so touched during Kristen and Erik's maternity shoot by their love and excitement for their soon-to-be daughter, so I knew that their newborn photo session would probably be a tear-jerker as well. And of course, they didn't disappoint! Watching Kristen gaze down at Violet, happy just to stare at her lying in her lap, I could feel my throat swelling and my eyes tearing up. I know, it's probably my  hormones, but seriously, it was so amazing (and such a privilege) to be spending a couple of hours with this family during one of the most special and intimate weeks of their life.

I love these little feet!

Hello little monkey...

And my favourite shot of the day...

Congratulations!! xo

It was a matter of time...

I caught Robin with her delicious little foot in her mouth today. She's growing up too fast [sigh]. 6 months old yesterday... I'll have two new blog posts up next week so stay tuned! Oh, and happy Friday.

Kristen, Erik and a blossoming baby bump

A few weeks ago, we packed up the car and travelled to Binbrook to spend an afternoon and evening with Kristen and Erik, Hallie (the dog), and their sweet baby bump. Kristen and Erik are soon-to-be parents of a baby girl, who they already lovingly refer to as "Violet". We spent the afternoon warm and cosy inside (while it snowed like crazy outside) hanging out, taking photos and talking all things baby (and a few things dog). It's obvious that they will be great parents – Violet's nursery is beautiful and almost ready, all the baby gear has been bought and set up, and they already have a bedtime routine of reading to her every night. As the sun went down, we relaxed with a delicious bottle of wine (Kristen is a winemaker and spoils us!) and an even more delicious dinner (turns out she can cook too!). It was the perfect way to spend a Saturday in February. It's amazing how Violet is already so deeply loved by these two. She will be arriving anytime in the next few weeks and Kristen and Erik will finally meet the baby girl they have been dreaming of and reading to, and begin life together as a family.

We couldn't be more excited for you. xo
